In complete honesty, I am completely infatuated with a certain subgenre of this music; it's personal to me - I see it as a powerful resource that has the kind of energy that has the passion behind it that inspires me, can calm me down, motivate me, or completely withdraw me from the world when I need that escapism. In my spare time, I was reading into my favourite artist, Burial, who is someone that I feel is artistically and creatively genius. I adore his ability to convey his attitude towards the world through his music and ability to express himself through the use of both spoken word and sound. There was a certain part in the interview that really summarized his intentions which I adored;
"When I'm awake all night, sometimes I see the people and the city waking up around me. I feel a little bit moody at them for stepping into my night-time. What I want is that feeling when you're in the rain, or a storm. It's a shiver at the edge of your mind, an atmosphere of hearing a sad, distant sound, but it seems closer - like it's just for you. Like hearing rain or a whale-song, a cry in the dark, the far cry."
And here is the rest of the interview that I feel is all the justification I need as to why I chose this genre.
Traditionally, rockers would like rock, and ravers liked dance music, etc. However, does Dubstep does not conform to these rules, and it is one of the new types of music that has broken down social barriers and a sense of "us and them". In the past, people have felt angry mostly towards the government and the way the country was run that created these divides. However, due to my generation being so comfortable and reassured, we do not feel the need to unite in seperate groups in order to feel a sense of stability.
The reason I wanted to work with this genre is because it's completely relevant to youth culture today, or lack of it. There aren't difinitive groups in this day and age. There are no distinctive divides. Dubstep really represents this. It's more about the vibe it creates and how people relate rather than making a statement, or people creating a culture like you would find in other cultures such as punk. Dubstep attracts all type of people, its all about having a good time. It tends to unite middle and working classes and all races. An example of this is two different freindship groups I have that both completely love the genre, however you would never expect it;
These pictures two groups of people that would attend a dubstep night, regardless of the way they dress, and their background. There is no hostility or tension between people that may have different appearances to each other. Generically, they shouldn't be socially connected in any way, however the music brings people like this together.
